About Art of Bleeding:

“The Art of Bleeding is a uniquely non-accredited educational institution offering powerful and ego-destabilizing lessons in health and safety. Our presentations (often staged from an ambulance) utilize live performance, film, puppets, music, animation, and thinly veiled medical fetishism to explore the topic of catastrophic health emergencies within the framework of children’s television programming.”

Though I digress. More about
The Last Saturday of October!

“This Halloween weekend, The Art of Bleeding will once again transform the Steve Allen Theater parking lot into a ghoulish carnival of entertaining catastrophes featuring a SPECTACULARLY REAL MULTI-VEHICLE CAR-CRASH TABLEAU.

Against a smoldering backdrop of twisted cars, you’ll have the opportunity to hear TRUE STORIES OF MEDICAL HORRORS and ACCIDENTS from a rotating line-up* of storytellers including MARGARET CHO, ANDY DICK, JIM TURNER, TOBY HUSS, EDDIE PEPITONE, SELENE LUNA, DON BOLLES, STEPHEN HOLMAN, CLINT CATALYST, MICHELLE CARR, KIM FOWLEY, DUKEY FLYSWATTER, DANNY SHORAGO, KIM STODEL, BIENO SVENGALI, and more.

Providing dubious educational counterbalance to these tales of trauma will be THE ART OF BLEEDING’S “Magic Ambulance Theater,” a tragically misguided children’s show featuring gore-drenched actors, pedantic Safety Ape, bickering robot, and an ample array of attendant nurses in less-than-ample wardrobe.

FEMALE BLOOD WRESTLING, and a frighteningly live sound-performance installation by the enigmatic medical miracles of BOUNCEHAUSEN round out the evening.

And by all means, feel free to come in your Halloween costume! Doctors, nurses, and ESPECIALLY accident victims encouraged. Prizes for outstanding achievements related to our theme.”

(Again, there’s a high likelihood this show may not be appropriate for children.)

———————————————————-
TICKETS AVAILABLE VIA:

Steve Allen Theater

———————————————————-

*Please note: this event takes place three separate evenings. I’ve listed the the night in which I’m a participant, for reasons that should be obvious— but hey! Maybe you’re not super-saturated with information on a daily basis, nagging like a steady succession of pop-up ads programmed to auto-start with a You-Will-Watch-Me insistence so gauche, your keyboard locks, a carcinogenic hue plagues your screen and sweeps it dark <del> as </del>

<del></del>Oh, #whatever

I’m sure any of the nights will be fun. I just hope to see you when I’ll be there, so we can . . .

And Now For Further Enticement, In The Words Of Madam M:

“Join us on June 5th for steamy readings, cold drinks and lovely ladies performing burlesque for your titillation. In the old fashioned style of everyone’s favorite Dolly Parton flick, dress to the nines and get ready to be sauced and saucy.

All of the resident ‘whores’ are available for these sequestered readings at any time during the event. Of course, any good brothel need a furtive ‘front’ or cover; ours is part saloon and part salon, offering a full bar with music, burlesque dancing, fortune-tellers, and installations from our poets and other artists at each event. [In addition to the featured readers], each night we will also introduce several “New Girls”…[performers] who punctuate the evening with a few special public performances.”

Music provided by the ever spectacular Daniel Ribiat.

Featured visual artists: Joshua Burian Mohr and Zoetica Ebb

“The cornerstone of The Poetry Brothel is the event series. Bringing a new twist to the tradition of poetry reading, The Poetry Brothel showcases a diverse roster of emerging and established poets.

However, our events are also interactive performance art pieces based on the concept of the prewar brothels in the United States and Europe.”

The Lady of Manners–has authored a venerable ‘How-To’ guide of charm and etiquette, exploring what one might refer to ‘the lighter side of Goth.’ At this event, the author will expound upon philosophies such as how being polite in contemporary society is exponentially more subversive than wearing t-shirts with so-called ‘edgy’ slogans, distill phenomena such as NotAGoth (denial of one’s previous “cobweb cred”), and posit questions such as “Exactly what is ‘age appropriate’ in terms of alternate aesthetics?”

The Lady of Manners, whose everyday attire of Neo-Victorian meets Tim Burton, knows first-hand what it is like to have strangers stop, stare, and occasionally grab at you, encourages black-clad gothy types to embrace their dark and spooky ways, but to also be aware that doing that is going to make you stick out…and that proclaiming that you are “So Unique And Different” while also complaining that “No One Understands You” is “a silly, silly contradiction that no one should hide behind.”

Catalyst, on the other hand, esteems to be “nifty-crafty in [his] revelry of Lachrymose Inc.” As much an extension of the oral tradition as a rudimentary ‘Show & Tell’ session, he plans to arrive armed with visual relics of social networking in the pre-internet days (‘zines, especially those with adverts for “pen-fiends,” as well as painstakingly decorated little treasures referred to as “FB”s–“friendship books” by some, “fetish books” by others).

In layman’s terms, think of a MySpace page in terms of being an actual page in a hand-made booklet. “Some socially awkward kid like me stuck in the bowels of the South created the thing, wielding watercolors and many a glue stick in the process,” he explains. “I then mailed it to a friend of mine in—oh, I don’t know, Buttzville New Jersey—who decorated the next page, then mailed it to a friend of his/hers in Zimbabwe, then mailed it…until something like a year later, when and if I was lucky, it would end up ricocheting back to me.”

Apart from the obvious correlation between FBs and Facebook—namely, the notion of meeting people through the “networks” of other people—there was an esoteric set of abbreviations that accompanied the subculture (“NNP” for “No New Pals”; “AA” for “Answers All,” etc), just as Millennial txtspeak has its “LOL”; “BRB”; “STFU”; “ILY” and countless other mutations.

Each serious about their craft—yet not taking themselves too seriously—ultimately, both Venters and Catalyst represent the classic archetype of The Outsider. Venters describes her work as “for those who have ever searched for beauty in dark, unexpected places, embraced their individuality, reveled in decadence, and have a sense of humor or whimsy about it”; whereas in the case of Catalyst, a self-proclaimed “alterna-queer with a shadowy sensibility,” he likens his penchant for Goya over Gucci as “a voracious appetite for something other than what my environment had to offer. Literally, it was the driving force behind…well, me driving 3 ½ hours to rent VHS tapes of Derek Jarman films from the only video store in Arkansas that carried them.”

Forty writers. One rule. Each story must be told in the first person. We invite you to a night of super-fresh local literary glitter as the wickedly
talented Clint Catalyst Cottonmouth Kisses and Michelle Tea The Chelsea Whistle kick off the publication of their new anthology that brings together a dream cast of literature’s new avant-garde, sandwiched alongside a few writers appearing in print for the first time. Catalyst calls the end product “a wonderful sampling of oddities, like a dangerous box of chocolates or an unmarked prescription bottle.” Care to sample?

Poptarts presents a night of: Puppet Terror Sunday, February 24, 2002 at Highways

Hi kids! Do puppets scare the living daylights out of you? Are marionettes a phobia that1s been interfering with your daily routine? Have you ever had the suspicion that you might be a display mannequin and your days as a human are numbered? Do you think that tiny, evil mechanical clowns live under your bed and are plotting to kill you this very minute? Do small dogs in sweaters make you anxious? Do team mascots fill you with dread? Do mimes make you nauseous? Are you now or have you ever been sexually attracted to a ventriloquist dummy? Are you ready for some fun- no strings attached?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you may need support and a forum for discussing your special needs. You will need unlimited access to information, advice and hands-on assistance in dealing with these issues from a caring and informed staff of professionals who have experience in this specialized area. Puppet Terror Magazine can help! A brand new fanzine (edited by Maid Marionette and Our Lady of Puppetual Hell) Puppet Terror is dedicated to anyone whose ever been terrorized by (or terrorized others with) hand puppets, marionettes and ventriloquist dummies. We also deal extensively with fears involving clowns, mimes, team mascots and the like. You are not alone! We understand!

To celebrate the launch of this innovative, important publication, Poptarts (curated by Marcus Kuilland-Nazario) is presenting a special night of Puppet Terror. On the bill are filthy, psychotic puppet master Paul Zaloom, the 3Muppets On Acid2 extravaganza of The Cinnamon Roll Gang, the Borscht-Belt dementia of puppeteer Howard Seth Cohen, the unbelievably enormous Celebration Arts Giant Puppets, and, direct from the Velvet Hammer, sinfully satanic puppetease Valentina Violette. There will also be readings (with testimonials to marionette mayhem and dummy decadence by Iris Berry, Clint Catalyst, and your hostesses for the evening, Shawna Kenny (aka Maid Marionette) and Pleasant Gehman (Our Lady Of Puppetual Hell). Just plain wrong videos, by Steve Hall and Jessica Newton-Smith, featuring bad puppets doing bad things will screen all night. Puppet-themed songs will be spun by the Vinyl Ventriloquist himself, The Millionaire, and more scary surprises will be announced. The first issue of the magazine, featuring true confessions, sick stories and puppet pin-ups will be available, as will as a limited edition of Puppet Terror designer T-shirts. There will be a bar, because in order to get through this event, you WILL need cocktails. Puppet fetish wear is heartily encouraged. Medical attendants will be on call, but we urge you to bring your own straight jacket!

It is my pleasure and priviledge to be curating a room / two-hour slot in the incomparable mega-multi-media hyper-intellectual interactive art event known as Platinum Oasis. Platinum Oasis, the experimental wing of Los Angeles Outfest, is the brainchild of legends Ron Athey and Vaginal Creme Davis. The experiment I’m throwing together is entitled “Eight / Ate: Homos, Homonyms, and Speaking Italics.” I anticipate it as being comparable to conducting a storm. It is scheduled to take place from 8:30 till 10:30 p.m., featuring spontaneous performance and exploration from: Rudy Bleu, a latino/chicano queer cultural activist. Mr. Bleu is editor of the ‘zine Scutter and host of the annual Scutterfest, a benefit festival to raise funds for the Scutter Queer Youth in Arts Scholarship. He also spends his time making music in the bands $3 Puta and Hot N Heavy. Clint Catalyst, the Southern-fried sissy-fied author of Cottonmouth Kisses, freelance writer and public nuisance Jared Gold, a Mormon Shawna Kenney, a freelance writer, Mistress of Ceremonies at Hollywood’s Harmony Gallery, and author of the award-winning memoir, I Was A Teenage Dominatrix Larva, the enchantress from Los Angeles, who will be performing cabaret. She is a designer’s assistant at Jared Gold Couture and Black Chandelier. Her turn ons include: staring at candy, screaming diaherrea from the car window, and the progression of her six senses. Her turn offs include: Tattoos, the f#$@! parking patrol, and the over cooked “pasta” at Sizzler. Dito Montiel, author of A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, who likes to fish (alone). Michelle Tea, Lambda Lit award-winning author of Valencia and punk rock dyke poster girl and Trinidad, the self-searching sadistic pseudo-masochistic spoken word artista. A tyro performer in OutFest, spinning the best of Latino erotica, world history, social genre, and human behavior. Using the power and wit behind words, distorting reality with the indifference of objectivity.
To celebrate LA Weekly’s very cool music week and Music Awards, HustlerHollywood’s Carnal Carnival has assembled a bunch of perverted punks to rant about Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll and NO Censorship.

The perverted punks are Etiquette For Outlaws authors Rob Cohen and David Wollock, Cottonmouth Kisses author Clint Catalyst, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints author Dito Montiel, I Was A Teenage Dominatrix author Shawna Kenney, Escape From Houdini Mountain author Pleasant Gehman and Motochrist guitarist, Marc Diamond. In addition to the rants there will be a few impromptu performances including a sing-along punk version of the Kinks’ Lola. So if you’ve had any experience with or views on Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll and No Censorship, show up and mouth off. There will be an aftershow party across Sunset at the Cat Club where more uncensored things will go on. You’ll find us out back, on the patio.
