Thanks to a number of friends aware of my affinity-bordering-on-obsession with actress and mega-model Kristen McMenamy, my in-box has been bombarded with .jpegs and .tiffs offering peeks into her latest performance: that of the ‘centerpiece’ for Viktor & Rolf’s AW/11 collection during Paris Women’s Fashion Week.

top models, yes: but in this context,

all just “part of the machinery.”

“Depression, addiction and mental illness are common problems in the modern world, with one in four people likely to experience a mental health problem every year. Established in 2009, Little Episodes is a not-for-profit organization consisting of professional writers, artists, musicians and actors with two prongs to its mission statement. The first, to destigmatize depression, addiction and mental illness, whilst raising awareness and providing empathy. The second is to provide a platform for talented, emerging and established writers/artists to find community and recognition. We combine the two by giving our participating writers and artists the first statement as their theme.”

Founded in the U.K., Little Episodes also curates ‘Late Night Episodes,’ a recurring event featuring spoken word, performance, music and visual art.  Late Night Episodes is held at the Novas Contemporary Urban Centre (London) on the last Saturday of every month.

Whereas Lenora Claire —another ‘repeat offender’ on this humble Dot Com—fully LET US HAVE IT with a mind-melding, retinal-shattering, hot hot hottt hairstyle!

Oh! But what have we here? An adorable  Kat Lee , per chance?

As a matter of fact, yes: yes it is, indeed… and in the haus with her band mate and business partner, the multi-talented Kaila Yu (L)!

with burlesque beauty Courtney Cruz sandwiched between an Alice duo… ♥

(while pssst! Here’s a little “JSYK,” if by chance you’re in the No instead of know):

The estimable Miss Cruz presents “tassle-twirling with a spin” at her once-a-month installment of The Devil’s Playground at Bordello bar. Described by journalist Erin Broadley as “Beyond traditional fan dancing and martini bathing,” the Devil’s Playground “integrates pop culture and niche fan favorites with the classic art of the striptease, modernizing burlesque with cleverly themed, character-driven performances like Video Game Girls, Comic Book Vixens and…Tails From the Crypt.” Known most recently for creating a disturbance in The Force for her Star Wars-themed bump-and-grind, it’s no wonder the L.A. Weekly deemed this Busty Storm Trooper’s resident troupe as Best Burlesque Club of 2009.

Here, Cruz exercised control with chanteuse Jessicka Addams and Mia Vixen, one of The Devil’s Playground performers.

Wait a minute.  I mentioned this was an art opening; didn’t I?

Oh-Kay.

Unfortunately, the gallery ran out of catalogs—so I can’t even credit the Kunstler responsible for the creation pictured above.  That being said, please allow me to segueway back to other deep and meaningful content, such as

the photo booth fun I had myself…ditto, Ela Darling and The Dirkulous Maximus.

Caught here on the other side of the camera is “Nightranger’s intrepid reporter Lina Lecaro,

whose years of  fearless ventures—from immersing herself deep in the trenches of trannies werkin’ the merkin to ravers wielding glow-sticks as if they were num chucks—have garnered her quite The Reputation.

Incidentally, Lecaro “dipped into the population” this eve not only for the sake of a newspaper word count, but also to celebrate the completion of her first full-length manuscript. (No, people: I didn’t say script. Leave those to your dental hygenist, who’ll likely have “something for you to look over” before the luxury of another kind of script gets written.  Oy.)

By manuscript, I mean book—of which her debut is titled
Los Angeles’s Best Dive Bars: Drinking and Diving in the City of Angels.  Its release date is May 1st, 2010

but why not go ahead and pre-order the betch?  Assuming you remembered to close out your tab at the bar last night, that is!   Such a hassle, retrieving one’s 16-digits on plastic The Day After.  Isn’t it?  [AHEM!]  I mean: So I’ve Heard.

However, this intimidating shopkeep?  Dare you cross such a retail terror? In the only image I captured by camera, it appears as if Mr. Jared Gold dared party-goers to dislike the wares of his pop-up store.

Conversely, this photo pilered from Lina Lecaro’s coverage of the Royal-T party is a more accurate representation.

And an accurate representation is what we’re going for here, yesiree! In the words of The Duchess herself: “Be what you would seem to be”—or if you’d like it put more simply—

“Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you would have appeared to them to be otherwise.”

I’m attempting to convey something here, to translate the vocabulary of my heart.

Let me try that again: What I’m trying to do is provide a soundtrack for Mia Tyler ’s photography, so I’d appreciate it if you’d just humor me for a minute, O.K.? (& that’s with a “please” & “thank you”)

I can’t tell you if it’s a song Miss Tyler would choose herself; hell, I don’t even know I’d pick it, if I were given the chance.  I don’t know much of anything, except that chance is how this intersection happened:

I flipped open my laptop, navigated my cursor and clicked the iTunes icon—you know the one, the CD symbol covered by a pair of musical notes?  They’re a water-cooler blue, the blue of an aquarium. A blue not unlike that of my screen-saver, but the click of another icon—planet earth engulfed in flames: the search engine, Firefox—eclipsed that hue when a page snapped open on this rectangle I gazed into, eyes skimming a page of tweets.  I don’t know that I’ll ever be comfortable with that phrase , a 140-characters-or-less challenge to “Think long thoughts in short sentences.” [Ferlinghetti]

But anyway, just as Lykke Li’s ethereal voice crept through my speakers, I happened to be scrolling through these images.  The combination of Li’s sensual, airy timbre with Tyler’s photographs, delirious with warmth; the harrowing rise of bows stroking cello strings with the lyrics “Lights black; heads bang/You’re my drug/We live it…”

Well, I was sideswiped by emotion.

Ah, but wait! Before you hit PETA on speed-dial, her website does provide the following disclaimer:

Controversy set aside for other ‘Great Debates,’ I’ll give her this: the prize ribbons from my collaboration with Jared Gold make a tame statement when juxtaposed with Pepard’s Swarovski-encrusted medallion:

While I’ll be the first to admit it’s a challenge to find killer* clothing and accessories designed for the gents, Peppard seems to earmark her creations evenly between the xy and the xx.  Here’s a bowtie certain to incite a response at—oh, just about any formal event:

*(double entendre un/intentional? a tricky thing, this ’subconscious’ we possess)

Based in London, Peppard keeps a personal blog, in which she chronicles her works-in-progress, road kill later to be fashioned into found art objects, et cetera. A detail you might find interesting? She’s vegetarian. About her company, she states:

“RP/ENCORE challenges our attitudes towards fur, leather and waste. In a world where leather is worn without question by most, and replaced by un-biodegradable plastics by the rest, it is ironic that the image of an animal preserved using taxidermy is still enough to cause widespread outrage and fist-banging. It is for this reason I taxidermy the prolific, consequential vermin result of London’s excess. A member of the UK’s Guild of Taxidermists, I use both traditional and alternative methods of taxidermy to preserve and embellish creatures that are widely thought disgusting and unnecessary. When they become sculptural headpieces, necklaces and cuff-links, the specimens cease to be waste and become objects to behold. RP/ENCORE makes use of the city’s leftovers.”

To be honest, I’d rate the content in the current “issue” as a 4.5—meaning, of course, I know full well The Indie Fashion crew is capable of upping the ante beyond the established paradigm.

My request? Sprinkle in some content from Japanese men’s Vogue—as I’ve yet to see a single copy at any news stand (and I live in L.A., for F’s sake)… but the scant amount I’ve been fortunate to locate on-line?

Sleek as an Atsuko Kudo latex pencil skirt freshly polished. Sophisticated. Deliciously androgynous.

Of course, there’s also the occasional editorial in Imago ‘zine (Canada), Gazelleland (New York), Coilhouse (Los Angeles) and the slew of $40-and-over periodicals rife with opulence, editorial genius and consummate consumer lust that creep their way over from Europe…

Because these?

Of course, this is merely my opinion: but it’s when these truly independent flashes of serendipity—synonymous far too often with short print runs before the recently-launched creations belly-up…

It’s when these disparate elements get stirred into an already stellar sampling of aspirational imagery

that my mind melds &

corneas are left burning with a brilliance that feels so
